Commerce Casino plans month of tournaments for California State Poker Championship

The California State Poker Championship tournaments begin Sept. 5 at the Commerce Casino leading up to the grand finale No-Limit Hold'em Championship that starts Sept. 23.

The championship event has paid out more than $300,000 for the winner the past two years.


According to the Commerce Casino, the California State Poker championship draws "the best of the West." Last year Tony Ma won the event and took home a little more than $384,000. In 2004 Ben Affleck won the championship, which was his first major poker win, and the $356,400 top prize.

The prize is expected to reach more than $300,000 again this year for the $2,500 buy-in event. The events leading up to the grand finale all have low buy-ins between $330 and $540, and they're all either Limit or No-Limit Texas Hold'em.

Sept. 12: No-Limit Hold'em, $540 buy-in with re-buys
Sept. 13: Turbo No-Limit Hold'em (six-handed), $330 buy-in
Sept. 14: Limit Hold'em, $330 buy-in
Sept. 15: No-Limit Hold'em, $330 buy-in
Sept. 16: No-Limit Hold'em, $330 buy-in
Sept. 17: No-Limit Hold'em Shootout, $540 buy-in
