ESPN to air Stu Ungar documentary Saturday

ESPN is scheduled to air "One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stu Ungar" Saturday at 7 p.m. (EST).

The one-hour documentary talks about the poker legend's life and interviews people that knew him.


While ESPN has done a show on Stu Ungar before, there are new interviews and added footage, including audio interviews with Ungar from when he was working with author Nolan Dalla on what was supposed to be his autobiography. Ungar's ex-wife, Madeline, and daughter, Stefanie, are interviewed as well as Doyle Brunson, Billy Baxter, Mike Sexton, Dalla and more.

Ungar was a child prodigy who at a young age was a gin rummy champion and would often play the game for high stakes. He was later introduced to poker and became arguably one of the best No-Limit Texas Hold'em players in poker history. However, his addictive personality led him to drugs which eventually killed him.

Earlier this year the Stu Ungar Foundation was established and launched by Madeline and Stefanie with the goal of helping mend fractured lives caused by addiction. The explosion of the popularity of poker is bringing new light to one of the game's legends, and will also help bring more attention to the foundation created in his name.
