PPA Criticizes Romney’s Non-Support of Online Poker

Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is being denounced by Poker Players Alliance (PPA) for his stand on online poker as being ignorant and uneducated about the security that will be established in any future internet poker legislation intended to safeguard both consumers and players against gambling addictions.

Romney firmly believes that the reason he can’t support any type of online poker in the United States is because of people’s addictive gambling habits and the social costs it would entail. The leading lobbying group supporting poker players stated their concern that perhaps Mitt Romney is not well-informed about the direction that poker legislation is headed. Romney’s statement against online poker seems to be premature, based on misconception or gambling regulations and misinformation about the status quo.

PPA Executive Director John Pappas said that if we do nothing about online gambling, then it will just heighten whatever perceived problem there is with this kind of gaming. Hence, it’s better to educate the presidential hopeful about this, that strong consumer protection and enforcement will be put in place to regulate online poker .

The PPA has strong faith in the federal legislation of online poker. Rich Muny, PPA Executive Vice President of Player Relations said that with licensing and regulation, age of players will be verified; consumers will be protected; and those displaying addictive gambling behaviors will be mandated. Currently, there are no laws providing such so supporting this kind of legislation would be a huge step towards the proper regulation of online poker.

The PPA is encouraging pokers players to express their opinions about this matter via Twitter and Facebook.
