Caribbean World Series of Poker soon to be in Jamaica

A Jamaican businessman is working on getting approval and sponsors for a poker tournament he's calling the Caribbean World Series of Poker in Jamaica. The proposed start date for the Caribbean event is Nov. 1.

Gary Dyer, who came up with the idea, said he expects the tournament to inject the Jamaican tourist industry with new life during what is normally a slow time leading up to the Winter tourist season.

Dyer's plan is to enclose the roof of the Wexford Hotel on Montego Bay's "Hip Strip" with glass barriers and air condition it for the tournament, taking advantage of the view and providing comfort for poker players.

The plan still hinges on getting the relevant approval and sponsorship from the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission and other businesses. Dyer said he is in talks with several businesses about the possibility of them sponsoring the event.

The Jamaican Tourist Board will also review the proposal and vote on July 13 whether or not they want to play a role in the event which would also include a beach party planned the day before the start of the tournament and a reggae show after the tournament is finished.
