Lawmaker told video poker could net $576M for NC
The North Carolina Education Lottery says the state could one day generate $576 million annually if lawmakers legalize video poker machines again and regulate them heavily.
The lottery released on Wednesday its analysis for a state senator who sought information on state revenues that could originate from casino-style video gambling games.
The Legislature banned video poker machines in 2007 but judges say similar-style sweepstakes games are exempt from the prohibition. Those cases are pending.
Sen. David Hoyle of Gaston County has suggested lawmakers could legalize video poker again and regulate them through the lottery if the games can't be banned completely. Hoyle asked for the revenue estimates.
Lottery spokeswoman Alice Garland said lottery leaders have no opinion whether the state should get into the video poker business.
