'Texas Hold'em' added to Oxford English Dictionary
The term "Texas Hold'em" made its first ever appearance in the Oxford English Dictionary last week when it was included as a subordinate entry under "Texas" as part of the updates released by the dictionary June 15.
Texas Hold'em was added along with thousands of other entries including yada yada, plasma TV, backlist, counterterrorism, blonde moment, air kiss, wazoo, and more.
"Words mean what they do because of how they are currently used, not how they were used 500 years ago, and not how they were used in Latin 2,000 years ago," explains Jesse Sheidlower, editor at large of the Oxford English Dictionary. "English has always expanded and it will continue to expand."
Oxford lexicographers collect new examples of word usage every day from all forms of communication, such as books, newspapers, and blogs. Those words are then stored and analyzed for possible inclusion in the dictionary.
