US Olympian Michael Phelps invited to 2009 Asian Poker Tour

Last years Asian Poker Tour lasted just 6 days, but this years events will play over the course of 12 days. Phelps was invited last year to the APT after winning a record 8 gold medals at the Olympic Games in Beijing. The race to get Phelps into a major poker event had begun after the Baltimore Sun, his hometown newspaper, had reported that he wanted to play in the World Series of Poker. Phelps was escorted to some big poker events by Doyle Brunson, a legend in the poker world. And there were rumors abounding that different online poker sites had signed the phenom swimmer. Nonetheless, entry into a major poker event never happened for Phelps.

BetFair, the WSOP Europe sponsor, had invited Phelps to play in the 2008 WSOPE series. Also, Phelps had been rumored to be involved with The Real Deal, a poker stage show at the Venetian in Vegas. A letter sent by Asian Poker Tour officials to Phelps this last week read, “We heard positive noises, but there was no sign of the human dolphin when they called ‘shuffle up and deal.’ We would like to extend this invite once again to you to come, all expenses paid, and take part in this showpiece poker event. The Main Event is in Macau between the 20th and 23rd of August, but the 12 day festival of poker starts on August 12th, so let us know!”

Phelps has had some image issues after a photo appeared in a tabloid of him holding a bong that allegedly belonged to 2008 WCOOP champ Carter ‘ckingusc’ King of South Carolina. Phelps had a three month suspension from competitive swimming and lost some of his endorsement deals as well.

The open letter from the APT alluded to Phelps’ recent public relations difficulties: “Some media reports even suggest that you may have got in with the wrong crowd in the last 12 months – we promise to keep you out of trouble. We’ll give you access to pools of sharks, fish, and those that you swim in! If you don’t want to bring your goggles, fair enough; bring a pair of sunglasses and your poker face! While you are at it, you could ask a certain poker playing President by the name of Barack Hussein Obama II if he fancies joining you!”

Last years APT Macau Main Event winner was Yevgeny Timoshenko, just a few months after this World Poker Tour Championship win in April.

Some players that will be seen battling for the big win at the APT Macau Main Event are 10 time WSOP bracelet winner Johnny Chan, Steve Sung, David ‘Chino’ Rheem, JC Tran, Nam Le, Quinn Do and Kwang Soo Lee. Each of them will also be a part of a new movie, ‘Poker King’, which Johnny Chan feels will outdo one of the best poker movies made, Rounders.
