WSOP Event #1 Recap

If the first event of the 2009 World Series of Poker is any indication of how the rest of the series will play out, then some of the analysts that predicted big drops in player numbers may be wrong.

Event #1 was the Annual Casino Employees $500 buy in event. This year there were 866 Casino employees that bought in to the event. Just a few dozen shy of last years 930 players.

This was a 2-day event that saw day 1 last a long 13 hours but at the close of the day, the bubble would burst and all remaining players would start day 2 in the money. The play of the day progressed at a speedy rate with more than half of the starting field being eliminated within the first 4 hours of play. Some of the notable faces in this tournament were Pat Poels, Marsha Waggonner, and former WSOP tournament director Jack McClelland.

Going into Day 2 the average chip stack was around 32,000. After another long day, just shy of 13 hours, the first bracelet of the 2009 WSOP was awarded to Andrew Cohen, along with $83,778.
