Chicagoan wins Bayou Poker Championship

The 5th season of the World Series of Poker Circuit has crowned their new championship at the Bayou Poker Challenge on Wednesday.

Jean ¡°Prince¡± Gaspard, a 37 year old poker player from Chicago, entered into final table action with a solid chip lead. The final table action lasted only five hours before Gaspard won his title and the largest victory of his poker career.

A former college basketball player for Northeastern University, the Haitian-born Gaspard once made it to training camps for two National Basketball Association teams before turning down offers to play professionally in Europe and Asia.¡°The reason I play sports is because I enjoy doing it ¨C it¡¯s as simple as that,¡± Gaspard said in an interview before the final table. ¡°I am very competitive by nature. Basketball meant a lot to me, but after I discovered poker, I found something new that I could compete, and win at.¡±
For his New Orleans Main Event win - the fifth of his career - Gaspard took home $211,722, a gold WSOP Circuit championship ring, and a $10,000 seat in the WSOP Main Event to be held this July. The win comes on the heels of his second-place finish in the $5,000 event at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas last month, where he won $150,305, the largest score of career up to that point. Gaspard¡¯s career tournament winnings now total more than $900,000.
