Yevgeniy Timoshenko wins WPT 5 Star World Poker Classic

After an eight day marathon of poker, Yevgeniy Timoshenko has emerged as the winner of the World Poker Tour Five Star World Poker Classic at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. For his win, the 21 year old poker player banks more than $2.1Million.

The former Ukranian poker pro who now lives in Washington state has also had money finishes in the Irish Poker Open, the Paris Open, Aussie Millions and the APPT Macau Main Event in 2008.

Upon winning the tournament, the modest Timoshenko had this to say, “I wasn’t expecting to win. I hoped to win, but in tournaments you can’t expect anything. Especially at a final table as rough as this one. I just hoped to play my best and come out ahead and luckily that’s what happened.”

Other players that Timoshenko had to contend with at the final table were Bertrand Gospelier, another internet poker pro; Shannon Shorr, Scotty Nguyen, Christian Harder and Ran Azor. Timoshenko had a 2 to 1 chip lead over his internet rival Grospellier, “ElkY” going into the final table.

As ElkY left the final table in 3rd place, it came down to the Jovial Gent, as Timoshenko is known online, and Ran Azor. For his second place finish, Azor banked a cool $1.4Million.

The next big event for Timoshenko will be the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo, and you can bet we will see him in this year’s World Series of Poker also.
