Milwaukee Beer Retained As WSOP Sponsor

Since 2006 Milwaukee’s Best Light Beer has been a major sponsor of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) held in summer in Las Vegas. Harrah’s, the owners of WSOP have now confirmed that Milwaukee’s Best Light will continue to be a lead sponsor for the event in 2009 and in 2010 as well. WSOP 2009 will start on the 27th of May. The Player of the Year award is also sponsored by Milwaukee’s Best Light, This award is given to the best player of the tournament. In 2008 it was won by Erick Lindgren.

Chad Dern, Marketing Director at Milwaukee, explained the advantages of this deal for the beer company. Through a press release he said, “Poker continues to enjoy growth both as a leisure activity and as a televised sporting event, so we want to make sure Milwaukee’s Best Light is the beer of choice whether fans are playing or watching at home.” The deal allows Milwaukee to use the official WSOP logo on its packaging and in promotions. Milwaukee will also be given signage throughout the massive Amazon Room at the Rio, where the tournament is staged. It will also get mentions in the telecasts of the events by ESPN.

On its part, WSOP also expressed its satisfaction with the deal. WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said, “We’re excited to have Milwaukee’s Best Light continuing on as the tournament’s official beer sponsor and we look forward to building on this successful relationship as the tournament kicks off its 40th year.”

Last year Milwaukee tied up with Phil Hellmuth to create an exciting promotion for WSOP. 12 million cans of Milwaukee’s Best Light and Milwaukee’s Best Ice had Hellmuth’s mug shot on them. The number ‘12’ was significant because Hellmuth was gunning for his 12th WSOP bracelet, a feat that he failed to achieve. Hellmuth was wearing a hat with his trademark ‘PH’ logo and a ‘Poker Brat’ shirt. Poker Brat is the label of the range of garments launched by Hellmuth. Each of the two brands of Milwaukee’s Best had two different quotes from the brat of poker. One said “If it weren’t for luck I’d win ‘em all!” and the other said “I can dodge bullets, baby!” No one can beat Hellmuth when it comes to bragging. When confronted with his face on the beer cans Hellmuth had said, “The feeling I had was really happy and powerful, and I guess that I’ll have to watch my ego. If it was big before, now it may blow up!” As of now it is not known if Milwaukee will repeat the promotion with Hellmuth. Perhaps not. There is no shortage of braggarts in the poker fraternity.
