Canadian Poker Tour National Champion Crowned
The Canadian Poker tour has crowned its national champion over the weekend at the CPT Invitational Finals which were held in the Dominican Republic at the Ocean World Resort and Casino. Fifty top players from across Canada were invited to play after qualifying through a point system that was based on nationwide events held in 2008. Party Poker, the exclusive sponsor of the event, also ran several satellite events that sent 7 players to battle for Canada’s top poker title.
Richard Webb, a 48 yr old from Ontario, was crowned the National Champion. He qualified for the event by winning the Blue Water Classic Poker Tournament at the Point Edward Casino last summer. Webb is well know around the CPT, he has won multiple events over the past 5 years and is also a contributor to Canadian Poker Player Magazine. Webb takes home $60,000 for his win, and a year long sponsorship from the CPT worth $100,000 to represent them at events worldwide. He is a great champion and I couldn't have hand picked a better player to represent us," stated CPT President and CEO Kelly B. Kellner. "His play over the years has exemplified all elements of discipline, risk and strategy and I look forward to travelling to poker tournaments around the world with him as CPT Champion." Coming in second place was former football player and 2-time Grey Cup Champion Bob Beveridge. Beveridge resides in Vancouver, B.C. and is a pro poker player. Of the three female participants, two of them finished very well. Angie Gelinas of Calgary finished in third place while Carolyn Grad of Alberta finished in fourth place, winning $30,000 and $20,000, respectively.
The Canadian Poker Tour is now into its 2009 season and looks to host over 250 events from coast to coast this year. With the launch of the CPT Players Membership Card, players will be competing to earn points towards qualification in this year's national finals whereby the top 50 finishers will be flown to the national championships and play for 6 one year sponsorship contracts for the following year. Further details can be found at www.canadianpokertour.tv on this and all upcoming CPT events. The one hour television show featuring the CPT Invitational Finals and presented by Party Poker will air beginning in April on The Score Television Network, the official broadcast partner of the Canadian Poker Tour.
