Feds continue video poker probe of Haywood Sheriff
Haywood County Sheriff Tom Alexander, who is the subject of a federal video poker investigation, said he is cooperating in the investigation and has “nothing to hide.”
Alexander declined further comment to The Smoky Mountain News.
A corruption case involving video poker machines recently brought down the former Buncombe County sheriff for accepting bribes in exchange for ignoring the illegal gambling operations. The same investigators are now targeting Alexander.
A U.S. District Court Grand Jury in Asheville has subpoenaed the Haywood County Human Resources Department to provide Alexander’s payroll records.
Alexander makes $78,068 a year, according to records provided by Haywood County Public Information Officer David Teague.
The subpoena also asks for a list of all current and former Haywood County sheriff’s office employees and their personal information such as home phone numbers and Social Security numbers.
The Haywood County Board of Elections was also subpoenaed to provide all records related to the election and re-election campaigns of Alexander, who has been sheriff since 1987.
The information demanded in the subpoenas must be provided by Dec. 2.
The recent subpoenas are not the first indication that Alexander has been caught up in the probe.
According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, Alexander hired Asheville attorney Sean Devereux in May after Alexander was subpoenaed for video poker registration records.
That first subpoena came after a witness in the trial of former Buncombe County Sheriff Bobby Medford testified that he also bribed the Haywood County sheriff.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that “Jerry Pennington, who set up new video poker locations and bribed authorities for the Henderson Amusement Company, testified that he paid ‘the sheriff of Haywood county $3,300 a month to ignore illegal poker machines.”’
Medford was sentenced to 15 years in prison last month for taking bribes.
