New Strip casino to rival Vegas' best

Phil Ruffin, a Kansas real estate mogul who bought the New Frontier in 1998 for about $200 million, is planning to replace the landmark with a $2 billion luxury hotel named after Montreux, a famous resort town nestled on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Ruffin hopes to begin construction by the end of this year pending the appropriate permits.

Paul Steelman, a legendary casino architect who designed the Mirage, the Sands Macau, and several casinos in Switzerland, as well as remodeled a slew of Las Vegas resorts, has been hired to design the 2,750-room hotel, and has chosen a posh mix of glass and waterfalls for its interior.

The Montreux's casino will take up 100,000 square feet, less than 2% of the property's total 6 million, while more than 500,000 square feet will be dedicated to retail space and 50,000 square feet allotted to a high-end spa and pool area.

The resort will boast a 116,000 square foot ballroom, the largest on the Strip, which will be outfitted to host major sporting events, including poker tournaments and hockey games.

It will also include a "lakefront" pool on the third floor of the property above the retail outlets, a 450 foot high observation wheel and a boulevard of upscale boutiques similar to those found on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
