Decatur police plan motorcycle poker run to help Relay for Life

Illinois - Decatur police said they are planning to Thunder Thru the Valley next month during a charity motorcycle poker run benefiting Relay for Life.

The department is sponsoring the event to raise money for its relay team, Arrest Cancer, with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, said Lt. Jonathan Green, public information officer.

"Thunder Thru the Valley will be a great opportunity to have fun out on the open road and support a worthy cause," Green said.

The event has five checkpoints, and riders get a card at each one, making up a five-card stud hand. Riders will pay $15 per bike, and extra hands are $5 each.

The poker run locations include KC's Powersports in Huntsville, DAR School in Grant, Big D's Cycles in Arab and Biker's Nest in Hartselle.

Prizes for best, worst

"The prize for the best hand is a free night's stay at Decatur Courtyard by Marriott, tickets to the Space and Rocket Center and a free meal at Applebee's restaurant," Green said. For those not-so-lucky riders, there is also a prize for the worst hand, he said.

The Thunder Thru the Valley Motorcycle Poker Run will be Nov. 1 with registration from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Point Mallard Park Pavilion. For more information, contact Elizabeth Clark at 341-4642 or Rhonda Tutwiler at 341-4602.
