Three hurt during 'poker run'

Motorcyclists collide leaving Decoy's pub.

MICHIGAN CITY - A Michigan City-area woman remained hospitalized Monday after a weekend crash between two Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Sherry Turner, 53, 2612 W. County Road 1000 North, was admitted to St. Anthony Memorial.

"Hopefully, she'll come home today or tomorrow," said her husband, Del Turner.

According to La Porte County Sheriff's Department, she was on the backseat of a 1996 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by her husband, westbound on U.S. 20 near Evergreen Plaza when Turner began making a right turn.

A 1970 Harley-Davidson driven by Richard Schroeder, 71, Michigan City, was behind him. Police said as Turner started making the turn, Schroeder veered to his right in an attempt to pass and drove into the side of the couple's motorcycle.

The Turners were thrown to the ground.

Schroeder, 5031 U.S. 20, tried regaining control of his antique motorcycle, but eventually wiped out.

"He kept going until his bike fell over," Del Turner said.

Police said both drivers sustained abrasions but their injuries weren't as serious.

Del Turner said the motorcycles involved in the crash were part of a poker-run fundraising event. The group had gathered at Decoy's bar and were heading to their first stop, the Blackhawk Inn at Westville, when the accident occurred.
