Asia Pacific Poker Tour picks up where the Asian Poker Tour left off
The largest online poker site PokerStars.net yesterday announced the commencement of the second season of the Asia Pacific Poke Tour (APPT) at the Grand Waldo Casino with a guaranteed prize pool of HKD 10 million.
Jeffrey Haas, CEO of PokerStars.net said that the organiser would donate HK$200,000 for local charities. He said that it was such a big excitement to him as many of world class poker players were participating in the tour, adding that there was an expectation that the number of participants would jump to double that of the previous session. Mr Haas went on to say that the tour in Macau would be broadcast live and believed that the development of a poker culture would be sustainable in the future. Johnny Chan, a Hong Kong poker play who had won the 1987 and 1988 WSOP (World Series of Poker), said that “it's bringing in top players like myself, and letting the world know that there is real poker here, and real poker players here, and that anybody can win millions of dollars.” The 35 year-old added that it's great for poker in Asia that there's a major tournament like this here in Macau. Celina Liu, a female poker player from Shanghai, China said that being seated at the last table would be her goal in this tour. She added that the poker game was also a kind of mathematics, which required one to calculate when to call and deal. At the tour, the current and still growing line-up of 400 odd players includes an unprecedented list of champion poker players who are bringing world-class poker action to Macau from September 1 to 9 and competing for the prize pool of HKD 10 million. The entrance fee of the Macau stop is HKD25,000 (USD$3,200) and the high roller event with a buy-in of HKD150,000 (USD$19,250) kicks off between September 7 and 9. Poker enthusiasts shall also have an opportunity to buy in to both APPT Macau events tomorrow at the Grand Waldo Casino and take their place against world class champion, until 13:30 pm. The last round of APPT in 2007 attracted 1,418 participants from 68 different countries taking part in the tour. Starting in Macau, the APPT this year will comprise five tournament events in Manila, Seoul and Auckland with the grand finale in Sydney on December 7. The event featured some of the game's most accomplished professional players from around the world, including Joe Hachem from Australia, Hong Kong's Johnny Chan, Celina Liu from Shanghai China and Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier from France.
