Celebrity golf and poker to be part of Super Bowl fan mix

Sports fans may get a chance to mingle with celebrities in the Par and Poker Celebrity Challenge for Charity, which will be held during Super Bowl week next year in Tampa.

Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, one of more than 30 celebrities that participated in the inaugural event during the 2008 Super Bowl in Phoenix, will be returning when the Super Bowl comes to Tampa next January, a release from organizers said. Other confirmed celebrities include Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ed Moses, NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, former Super Bowl quarterback Jim McMahon and actor Alfonso Ribeiro.

Funds raised will go to the Joyner-Walker Foundation Inc., a Tempe, Ariz.-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing life skill programs to assist high school and college students in a way to prosper and be self-sufficient. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to a local charity that has complimentary values to the foundation, a spokeswoman said.

The second annual tournament, hosted by former NFL player Seth Joyner and former NCAA golfer Andy Walker, is comprised of two parts: an 18-hole golf tournament and a No Limit Texas Hold ’em poker tournament. The golf portion will be held at TPC Tampa Bay in Tampa, home of a PGA Champions Tour event each spring.

Three seats to the annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas will be up for grabs in the poker tournament. No details about the poker tournament site are available yet.

The event, to be held on Jan. 29, will be open to the public as participants and spectators. Registration is $1,500 for an individual for the golf and $1,000 for the poker.
