World Series of Poker Europe to be played at the Empire

World Series of Poker Europe to be played at the Empire 5th August, 2008
The World Series of Poker brand made the jump over the pond last year to bring the most prestigious series of poker tournaments to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.
Last year the WSOPE was played in three venues throughout London, but this year players will all be housed under one roof at the Casino at the Empire, which is located in Leicester Square, a world-famous location.
“Empire is excited to be hosting poker’s greatest players,” said Michael Silberling, COO of London Clubs International. “Our Leicester Square property provides a fitting backdrop to conduct such a prestigious event like the World Series of Poker Europe.”
In addition to the one-venue structure, Americans will also get their first chance to watch the European World Series of Poker because it will be covered by ESPN this year. The excitement surrounding the event this year is expected to be greatly increased from its successful inaugural year.
“We are eagerly anticipating World Series of Poker Europe this year,” said Ty Stewart, director of marketing for the World Series of Poker. “We have enhanced the schedule to provide more variety and game play, greatly broadened the worldwide television exposure and have brought the event under one roof to better the player experience for this prestigious and premiere event.”
The inaugural event last year was a great success, with 623 entrants. The main event was won by a female, Annette Obrestad, from Norway, who was awarded £1 million after outlasting a field full of poker professionals including Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth.
“Harrah’s has obviously put effort into making a lot of improvements to the event,” said Phil Hellmuth, professional poker player. “I would like to make history by being the first American to win a bracelet in Europe.”
Last year was the WSOPE was only a series of three tournaments; this year will have four, culminating with the £10,000 buy in main event.
