ABC15 Investigation Helps Lawsuit Get Lead out of Poker Chips

Phoenix - An ABC15 investigation exposed high levels of lead in some poker chips.

Now, that investigation is getting results in California, helping to make changes in twenty-one casinos.

In November 2007, the ABC15 Investigators found lead in Paulson-brand poker chips used in most popular casinos.

In test after test, our investigation found lead in 100 percent of casino chips we tested. All exceeded the EPA’s allowable limit for lead.

On Thursday, the Center for Environmental Health announced it had reached an agreement with Gaming Partners International, previously known as Paulson Gaming Supplies, to eliminate lead threats from gaming chips, which previously had contained as much as 47% lead.

GPI’s gaming chips will as of November 1, 2008 be legally required in California to contain no more than .005% lead.

The California casinos named in the agreement will have to post warning signs inside their casinos that say "Gaming chips used at this establishment contain lead, a chemical known to cause cancer, birth defects and other reproductive harm. Wash hand after handling chips”.

High levels of lead is a big concern for employees who handle these chips daily and pregnant women visiting casinos.

GPI had no comment.

According to GPI’s website, it is the market leader of manufacturing poker chips. It produces for 28 of the 30 largest U.S. casinos.

Including here in Arizona.

Arizona's officials at the Department of Health were not available for comment.
