Day one ended with the field being narrowed to 63 players, all of whom were in the money at that point. Robert Workman, who went into the days’ play with the top chip stack was eliminated early in the day with KK to David Levi’s A-Q as Levi flopped a pair of aces and neither players hand improved afterward.
After the dinner break on Day 2, the field was quickly narrowed to the final table status. Day 3 of the event say Joe Tehan in the lead with Jacobo Fernandez just $30,000 behind him in chip count. David Singer, who eventually to the bracelet started out with the 2nd lowest chip stack at the table. All the players had the final table had one thing in common, they were all Americans.
Glen Bean, who started the day with the lowest chip stack was the first to be eliminated, moving all in on his J-8 to Zachary King’s A-Q, but fell short of taking the pot when King got an ace on the river. Bean was out in 9th place and earned $19,464. The next player to be eliminated was Al Barbieri, who went all in on K-6 with a very short stack. David Singer called him with A-Q. With a flop that included an ace, Barbieri’s hand never improved and he went home in 8th place $26,764. Play continued and the next player out was Zachary King who’s A-8 was no match to the AA held by Greg Alston. King earned $34,063 for his 7th place finish.
With three people gone from the final table, David Singer had gone from 8th in the chip count to 2nd in chips behind Jacobo Fernandez. Joe Tehan was the next player eliminated as he went all in with J-10 to Singers pocket 9s. With neither player’s hand improving with all the community cards played, Tehan was out in 6th with $43,796 in prize money.
Russ Harriman was eliminated in 5th place as he went all in with pocket queens to Greg Alston’s AJ, as Alston paired his ace on the flop. Robert Lipkin finished in 4th place after pushing over the top with 7-5 suited to Singer’s pocket jacks. Lipkin’s prize for this 4th place finish was $67,640.
With three players left, Greg Alston had the lowest chip count and went all in after being dealt pocket jacks only to fall to Fernandez’ pocket eights as Fernandez hit a set on the turn. Alston was out in 3rd with $82,725.
Heads-up action started with Fernandez holding a slight chip lead. A long dinner break was called for as the two remaining players had almost identical chip stacks, only 40,000 separated the final players. After the break, Singer begin to steadily lose his chip stack but fought his was back when he held A-K to Fernandez’ pocket fives. The flop on that hand gave Singer two pair. Singer doubled up to 1.7 million chips and never looked back. The final hand of the game had Singer holding Q-4 to Fernandez’ 7-3 and once the flop had been dealt.
