Duke to host poker tournament
Annie Duke, one of the world's top professional poker players, has signed on to host the $100,000 Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament in October at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino.
Chatting with reporters at a Tuesday lunch at the casino, Duke said said luck has little if anything to winning at poker.
“It's a game of smarts,” she said, adding that even though there are few women professional poker players, women probably could be more successful because of their ability to “read faces.”
For any aspiring professional, Duke advises, “Go to school first” because it's very important to understand the numerology and psychology of the game and its players.
Her brother encouraged her to go professional when she showed a natural aptitude for it.
“I won $70,000 my first tournament,” she said, and took her brother's advice to move to Las Vegas. She lives in Los Angeles now and rarely visits Las Vegas, she said.
As for winning, she said poker players have a “tool box” including knowing when to hold, when to fold, when to call, when to bluff.
“It's a great way to make money,” she said.
The tournament opens Oct. 5 and reservations are now being accepted for seats at the poker tables.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino will continue its tradition of providing world-class gaming and entertainment events by holding a high-stakes Poker Tournament. The Tournament will begin at 7 p.m. in San Manuel Casino's Yuhaviatam Showroom.
Hundreds of players will compete to win their share of an enormous pay-out. Players will be qualified by meeting specific play requirements at San Manuel Casino. Players must have a valid Club Serrano Card prior to registering for the event on Oct. 25.
“After the success of our landmark $100,000 Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament in celebration of our 21st anniversary earlier this year, it seemed only natural to up the ante with another fabulous tournament,” says Steve Lengel, Executive Director of Operations for San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. “Our guests are excited about this new opportunity to play for big bucks at San Manuel.”
San Manuel is lining up some surprise celebrity guests to be on hand for the event.
