Poker run cycles $4,000 to Crusade for Children

HARDIN COUNTY — High temperatures meant lower numbers for the eighth annual Touchtone Energy Motorcycle Charity Poker Run.

Riders in Saturday’s event faced temperatures in the mid-90s and Nolin RECC Communications Coordinator Patsy Whitehead said that played a role in how many riders participated and the amount of money raised. All funds go toward the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Even with those obstacles, the run generated several thousand dollars for the Crusade.

“It’s hard to find a better cause than that of helping to provide needed medical care to sick and handicapped children,’’ Whitehead said. “Some of the riders in this event tell stories of how their family has received help from the Crusade for Children and express their desire to give back so that they can help others.’’

There were 190 bikers taking part in the event and $4,026 raised. Whitehead said competing rides likely also played a role in the lower-than-usual turnout.

“All in all, even with the lower number of riders, the cause was well worth the effort,’’ Whitehead said.

The poker run raised $4,900 last year and has contributed more than $34,000 to the Crusade for Children over its run.

The poker run ended Saturday afternoon at Central Hardin High School from two starting points: East in Danville and West in Bowling Green. Both rides started at 1 p.m.

One rider was participating from Arlington, Va., Whitehead said.

“I think it is one of the best community fundraisers rural electric cooperatives are involved with today,’’ Whitehead said. “We’re helping those who need it most.’’
