The American Cancer Society benefits at Mary's Corner Poker Run Sept. 16

Chester NY = Mary Anderson's husband, Willie Anderson, retired from Local 17 in 1991 as a mason tender and decided to open a pushcart hot dog stand at their property on the corner of Craigsville Road and Route 94 in Chester.

Mary was a mail carrier for the Chester post office, and since her house was on her route, she checked on Willie every day to make sure he was doing OK with the stand until she retired herself in August 1991. Upon her retirement, it became a joint effort.

Unfortunately, Willie passed away from a long battle with asbestosis Dec. 21, 2004. The stand then became Mary's Corner. Mary has also gone through a life-threatening and eye-opening experience, having been diagnosed with cancer in 1976. She was sent to Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo and stayed there for her entire treatment. Mary is still cancer-free today. Now she felt it was her turn to give back.

The second annual Mary's Corner Poker Run to benefit the American Cancer Society will take place Sept. 16 (rain date Sept. 23) at Mary's Corner. Registration is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger and takes place from 9-11 a.m.. Home-baked food will be available for a breakfast buffet, and don't pass up Mary's hot dogs along with beverages after the run.

I attended the poker run last year, and Mary is the most gracious hostess. We'll see if we can get her to ride in the side car this year.
