NPL charity a big hit
The poker industry had another chance to give back at the NPL U.K. charity event.
The NPL, in conjunction with Poker Cares, held the U.K. Open Charity Party on Aug. 16 and raised more than $30,000 for the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
"The Great Ormond Street Hospital is such a monumental charity, responsible for saving and nurturing the lives of so many children, it was our distinct pleasure and esteemed privilege to be part of those efforts et forth today," commented Andy Liakos, Director of Public Relations of the NPL.
A large number of NPL U.K. players and spectators were in attendance taking a much needed break from the non-stop poker action. Hosted by local DJ Lisa Loud there was a champagne and jazz band reception followed by a silent auction.
Well-known poker pros like Matt Dale, Sonny Osman and recent NPL winner Mel Judah all took part in the bidding. Another NPL winner, Tony "The Enigma" Poulengeris, won a trip to a five-star hotel in Morocco.
The night was an overwhelming success according to Cherie Murphy, the fundraising executive at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity.
"We are so grateful to the NPL and the Loose Canon Club for their brilliant fundraising efforts. Great Ormond Street Hospital is a world-class hospital but needs to raise £50 million each year to continue our pioneering work," she said. "The generosity of all those who donated money and prizes will help take us closer to this goal."
The Great Ormond Street Hospital treats more than 100,000 patients every year while Poker Cares is made up of poker players, professionals, fans, industry insiders and fundraising experts who care to make a difference in the community.
The NPL is one of the younger poker organizations and this is the first year they've attempted to run a global circuit.
