Poker Run benefits historical society

Laconia, NH - Its not often that Dom Tarallo hits the air conditioning button while the top is down on his 1993 Chevy Corvette, but Saturday's sweltering heat made it a must as he joined approximately 30 other people in a poker run and classic car show that benefits the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society.

The Laconia resident was among those who circled the Big Lake and hit various stops picking up chips at businesses that could be redeemed for cards with the idea that the best six-card hand won a prize.

Stops included everywhere from Kellerhaus in Weirs Beach to Circle Grocery in Alton.

Saturday's car show saw riders ending in the parking area at Funspot in back of the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society headquarters on Route 3.

Tarallo said he enjoys taking part in such events, but said the 90-plus degree temperatures made a little air conditioning a must, even if the convertible top was down.

"That's cheating though," said Tarallo with a laugh.

He said Saturday's ride was hot, but enjoyable despite considerable summer traffic in Meredith and Wolfeboro.

"I just enjoy going out and taking a drive around the lake. It's a nice quiet ride," said Tarallo.

The nonprofit Winnipesaukee Historical Society operates a free year-round museum at their location next to Funspot in Weirs Beach. Ann Sprague, the organization's executive director, said this year's poker run was a first for the group as a fundraiser.

She hoped that more people might take part the event, but she had nothing but praise for all of those who hit the streets for a good cause.

"We really appreciate the support of all the people who attended and our sponsors," said Sprague.

The historical society teamed up with sponsors Oldies 99 and 104.9 and JT's Barbecue and Seafood to offer a car show, raffle and dinner for the some 34 people who participated.

Those attending drove everything from 1947 MGs and various model-year Corvettes to a variety of Ford Mustangs ranging from 1965 editions to a 2007 model that was among the top cars in the show.

Sprague said organizers hope to make the poker run a yearly event, which will supplement other fundraising efforts like bingo at Funspot and an arts and crafts festival.
