Raffles, auctions, poker run to help Cord

PUNTA GORDA, Florida -- Perri Turner has been thankful for the response from local businesses and individuals to help Lynn Cord, a 50-year-old Punta Gorda code compliance officer who finds herself facing a life-threatening battle with cancer.

"She needs our help right now," said Turner, who is a co-worker in the city's code enforcement division. "The more we can do now to ease her financial burden, the more she'll be able to focus on beating this cancer, fighting this battle."

The special benefit is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Coral Rock Cafe, 4560 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. The benefit will include food, raffles, silent auctions, a dunk tank, a live remote of beach 98.9 FM and other activities.

The silent auction bidding will end at 3:30 p.m. and winners will be announced at 4 p.m. People will be able to bid on guided fishing trips, sunset boating cruises, rounds of golf at local clubs, a beach weekend on Manasota Key, European massages, airplane tours of Charlotte Harbor, restaurant and other gift certificates for local businesses.

Live auctions, 50/50 drawings and other hourly raffles will be announced throughout the day.

The Port Charlotte chapter of the Chrome Divas plans a poker run with $100 for the best hand. Registration is 11 a.m. to noon at the Coral Rock Cafe.

The benefit's dunk tank features City Councilwoman Marilyn Smith-Mooney and City Manager Howard Kunik.

Organizers also set up a special Busey Bank account for Cord where monetary donations can be made at the bank's Punta Gorda branch, 2801 Tamiami Trail, Punta Gorda, FL 33950, or its Port Charlotte branch, 1490 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte, FL 33948.
