WPT in espanol this October

Poker players everywhere are crying olé! following today's announcement of an additional World Poker Tour Season 6 stopover in Spain this October.

The WPT has struck a deal with Spain's largest casino operator, Grup Peralada, to film a 14th tournament at the Casino Barcelona in the fall.

The new tournament follows the WPT's decision to cancel the filming of another European event, the Grand Prix de Paris, which will still proceed in May but without the tour's cameras.

Due to changes in France's gaming environment, the WPT didn't receive the assurances needed to proceed in covering the event, the company said in a release Thursday. The WPT said it will continue to work with Parisian officials for permission to film at the casino - the city's famed Aviation Club - at a later date.

Meanwhile, the WPT and Grup Peralada have also agreed to collaborate in future online poker ventures in Spain. In addition, the companies are discussing the possibility of a Spanish tour that would televise tournaments at Grup Peralada casinos as well as new WPT stops in Portugal and South America.

WPT CEO Steve Lipscomb called the partnership a "groundbreaking deal" that will create opportunities for both parties.

"This is a very important move for us as we continue to expand our business in the European market," he said.

"It will create a new standard for premium, televised poker events in Europe and lay the groundwork for an Iberian tour involving other leading casinos in Spain and Portugal," said Grup Peralada Casino Division CEO Oliver Zugel.

Season 6 of the WPT gets underway May 19 with the Mirage Poker Showdown in Las Vegas.
