Another one bites the dust in Mount Pleasant poker case

As more time goes by, more and more players are choosing to plead guilty and end their fight in the Mount Pleasant, S.C., poker bust case.

The latest to drop out is Alvin Johnston, 24, who pleaded guilty to a charge of gambling Wednesday. According to authorities, he was fined $100 by the judge.

Johnston was one of 22 players given a citation last April during a raid of a Texas Hold'em game at a private home. Police also confiscated more than $6,000 during the raid.

Originally, 18 of the 22 people cited, known as the Mount Pleasant 18, chose to fight the citation and take the case to a jury trial in order to try to change the laws regarding poker in the state.

The law in South Carolina, which is more than 200 years old, bans games with cards or dice, and makes no distinction for games of skill or even children's games.

Cases for about half of the original 22 people charged remain open according to The Post and Courier.
