WSOP Circuit series rolling on the river again
The World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) hit the river again yesterday with the launch of the latest stop at Caesars Indiana - the world's largest riverboat casino. Fittingly, some old-timey gambling luck floated to the surface for 37-year-old Bill Latta.
Elizabeth, Ind. - or at least the Ohio River part of Elizabeth, Ind. - was a hot bed of "to do" yesterday, with action returning to Caesars' riverboat casino for another highly anticipated WSOPC event.
Event #1 attracted an over-capacity crowd of 714 players willing to play some $300+$40 No-Limit Hold'em, generating a prize pool of $219,050 and the first big cash of note for one William Latta, an industrial manager from Mt. Zion, Ill.
The father of two, who's been playing poker for 20 years and has a thing for heavy metal, made his big move with four players left.
Chasing a flush draw with four-way action, Latta ended up pairing a seven to beat a higher draw and take a huge pot, soaring to a big chip advantage.
By the time they hit heads-up play, he'd managed to massage that chip advantage to a better than 6-1 lead over runner-up Charles Dawson and rode it out - 43 hands later - to the win.
Latta, whose only prior tournament cash of note was a second-chance seventh-place finish in Tunica, took home $54,708, a handsome gold and diamond trophy ring and a seat in the series-end $5,000 championship event for his troubles.
Here are the rest of your final table results from Caesars yesterday:
Place Name Prize 1 William Latta $54,708 2 Charles Dawson $28,671 3 Michael Egy $16,210 4 Brad Sturgeon $14,184 5 Geoffrey Boes $12,157 6 Steven Symsick $10,131 7 Dwight Gurtz $8,105 8 Brent Phillips $6,079 9 William Hagan $4,052
Action continues daily at Caesars Indiana until the big $5,000 finale April 4, with the winner of the championship event scoring an automatic entry into the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas.
