Gold plummets at Borgata Poker Classic

Day 3 at the World Poker Tour's Winter Borgata Poker Classic in Atlantic City has dawned and the field of 570 who ponied up $10,000 to start the show is still being whittled away slowly. Twenty-seven players will be left at the end of the day but Jamie Gold and countless others won't be among them.

Well, actually, they can be counted. The number will be 543 along the rails or long-since departed for fairer climes, and by association no longer in the mix for the $1.6 million first-place pudding.

Among those 543: Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow, Gold, Steve Dannenmann, Vanessa Rousso, Nam Le, Scotty Nguyen, and a host of other "big poker names" drawn to the chilly shores of Atlantic City for the Borgata event.

A large turn-out pushed the prize pool up to over $5.5 million and 54 players will end up with a piece of it, with the more than agreeable $13,823 the least that can be had for cashing this weekend in Atlantic City.

Reigning World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champ and recent Bodog-castoff Jamie Gold was holding the chip lead at one point, but his fortunes turned drastically on Day 2, and he's hit the bricks, failing again to follow his WSOP win with any success on the WPT.
