Magnanimous Swede wins EPT3 Copenhagen
It may have been his first European Poker Tour event, but it won't be his last. Magnus Petersson, a 29-year-old financial advisor from Stockholm, put the finishing touches on a €550,000 win on Saturday and stayed in his girlfriend's good books at the same time, declaring he was going to pay for her new BMW.
Immediately after his win, he had this to say on the PokerStars.com blog from the Copenhagen event:
"I have no real plans for tonight - maybe a drink. My girlfriend lives a couple of hours from Stockholm and bought a car today, a BMW. This money will pay for it."
A princely move on Petersson's part, as he won his €5,000 seat for the European Poker Tour Season 3 (EPT3) Copenhagen event in a $475 PokerStars.com Saturday satellite tournament, a day he usually reserves for spending time with his girlfriend.
"But she was away that day," Petersson says. "... luckily."
Luck played a bit of a factor in Petersson's win as well, as he rivered a full house and got away with a called 7-2 all-in bluff when a two hit the flop, but ultimately both solid play and luck claimed the title away from Team PokerStars player Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier heads-up.
Richard Toth of Hungary finished third.
Petersson is going on to play in the EPT3 Monte Carlo Grand Final at the end of March and maybe the Warsaw event two weeks prior, but has no immediate plans to turn professional.
"I may play a few more tournaments now, though," he said.
The EPT3 Copenhagen line-up included poker legends T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy, but when all was said and done it was predominately Scandinavians at the top, with Cloutier busting out in 20th.
The next EPT3 event goes Mar. 8-11 in Dortmund, Germany. The German Open will be capped at 500 players, and 410 players are registered already.
