Small Town Poker Tour starts 2007 down south

The Small Town Poker Tour (STPT) - the world's largest amateur poker tour - kicks off their 2007 Pro Am Series Wednesday in Lafayette, La., with all proceeds to benefit the United Way.

Open to all poker players around the world, the mission of the STPT is two-fold: to find the world's number one amateur poker player, and to raise money and awareness for charity in the process.

Along the way, they'll visit all 50 states, plus a host of countries around the globe.

The STPT's 2007 American leg of the World Pro Am Series begins tomorrow at the Heymann Center in Lafayette, and this year's event winner will take home a $5,000 Visa gift card and a championship ring.

Prizes will also be given to the top 10 finishers, and the winner will move on to the STPT World Pro Am Championships in Las Vegas.

"We are eager to bring this event to Lafayette," Mark Fracalossi, STPT Executive Producer, said in a release. "Poker is a great sport and I can't wait to see the talented players from the South."

"Our goal is to raise as much money as possible for the local charities, plus give the players a great experience."

The STPT works with a number of charity organizations, both large and small. All proceeds from this event will benefit the United Way of Acadiana.
