Underdog takes 'Late Night Poker Masters'

Hendon mobster Barny Boatman couldn't do it. Neither could pros Marcel Luske or Kenna James, as unheralded amateur David Tighe refused to be knocked out at the PartyPoker.com "Late Night Poker Masters" and took home $100,000 for his persistence.

The follow-up to the popular "Late Night Poker Ace" on Channel 4 in the U.K., the "Late Night Poker Masters" added a twist: some of the best amateurs would get a shot at the pros this time.

And they proved they belonged, with Tighe and Sweden's Simon Ehne outlasting the pros and eventually going heads-up for the title, which Tighe won with a pair of kings over Ehne's sixes.

The 23-year-old musician from the U.K. surprised everybody by hanging on against the tough pros at the final table, and even by defeating Ehne, considered by many one of the most talented amateurs around.

"I was encouraged by what little gap, if any, there was between the professionals and the amateurs," Tighe said in a release. "Going into the tournament I was a little apprehensive about taking on these big names, but I felt that the amateurs would definitely hold their own."

"This was the biggest win I have had to date and will allow me to compete in a lot more tournaments."
